Grover "Sonny" Winton Savage
SEPTEMBER 8, 1942 – SEPTEMBER 20, 2022
IN THE CARE OF
Grover ”Sonny” Winton Savage, age 80, passed away at his home in Gastonia, NC on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. When Sonny closed his eyes here on Earth, we rest assured that he opened them in Glory, witnessing firsthand all that he believed would be awaiting, and more. In heaven, he was met by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with his wife, grandson, and countless other friends and family members who have gone on before.
Sonny was a proud graduate of Ashley High School in Gastonia with the class of 1960. He was a faithful member of Yorkwood Church of God until recent failing health prevented him from doing so. There at church, Sonny enjoyed his many years serving the Lord as the Sunday School Superintendent. Still now, others continue to comment on Sonny’s dry wit and impeccable sense of humor divulged from the pulpit making weekly announcements. No doubt that Sonny’s endless stories and laughter will truly be missed, along with his easygoing “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” attitude.
Sonny was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Etta “Jane” Savage; grandson, Gabriel Paul Savage; his parents, P.G. and Berta Mae Savage; and brother, Clyde Herald Savage.
Sonny is survived by his sisters; Willie Summey and Ann Whitlow (Steve), daughters; Rebecca Savage of Shelby; and Sarah Tucker (Joe) of Gastonia; and his son, Jonathan Savage (Amy) of Gastonia. Not to mention, his biggest treasures were his four grandchildren: Victoria & Isabella Savage, and Andrew & Faith Tucker.
A visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Yorkwood Church of God with the funeral service to begin at 12:00 pm. A committal service will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
