Walter Cox Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Walter Thompson Cox, Jr. (Tom) at his home on September 24, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on August 1, 1941, in Charlotte, NC, Tom faced his diagnosis of Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia in 2021 with strength and grace, always surrounded by the love and care of his family.

A proud graduate of NC State University, Tom earned his Bachelor of Science in Textiles and remained a devoted Wolfpack fan throughout his life, though he also found joy in cheering for the Gamecocks and the Tigers. On June 16, 1979, he married the love of his life, Jane, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. Tom's hands were rarely idle, as he was known for his skill as a handyman who could fix anything and his passion for collecting what he fondly called "good junk." He was never short on wisdom and often shared it through his legendary "lectures." A fan of classic westerns, he loved watching "Gunsmoke" and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.

Tom worked diligently for many years as a successful salesman, always driven by his dedication to providing for his family. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His beloved wife Jane lovingly cared for him until his final days, exemplifying the deep bond they shared.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Floy Mitchell Cox and Walter Thompson Cox, Sr.; his brother, Charles Cox; and his daughter, Dana Cox Gregory. He is survived by his wife, Jane Traylor Cox; his daughter, Dawn Cox Joslin and her husband Jeff; his daughter, Angela Cox Hinson and her husband Trey; and his son, Walter Thompson Cox, III and his wife Laura. He leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Shelby, Caroline, Thompson, Will, and James.

A private family service will be held at a later date to celebrate Tom's life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom's memory to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org), his home church, Chapin Christian Community Church (415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036), or his current church, Mt. Horeb Church (1205 Old Cherokee Road, Lexington, SC 29072). Tom's family is deeply grateful for the love and support they've received during this time.

The Treasured memories we create live on in the lives we have shared.
For each of us to have made a difference is the best we can hope.  Rejoice and celebrate the good times granted by our parents and forefathers.

The Sunshine in our lives casts shadows upon all we meet.  Be Thankful for the time granted and move forward.  There is no such thing as failure; rather a matter of being at the right spot at the right time.  Hollywood hasn't discovered me Yet !

Humor and music are like benchmarks or reference points in our lives for our memories.  May the family find Solace in this music so aptly titled by well known composer: Scott Joplin   "Solace"

Noteably used in the movie, "The Sting"

Tom was my dear friend for more than 60 years. We met at Ashley and were neighbors, while he was married to Melba, when we attended NC State. We maintained our long-distance friendship by exchanging phone calls and time together at our class reunions. Beverly and I will miss him.
