Memories Before High School (neighborhood, elementary & jr high, etc.):

I loved attending Victory School from the 1st through the 9th grade. These were my "growing up years" and I have so many great memories from those days. Mr. Lingerfelt was a hard-nosed disciplinarian and held everyone's respect, even if it was partially out of fear. He made a believer out of me when he caught Henry Thomas & me "red-handed" writing the big "F-word" in the red dirt of the play ground. He reprimanded us, especially since we couldn't explain what it meant and had even spelled it wrong. I think our ignorance saved us from a paddling but I can still remember the fear & especially the pain in my ear as he drug us to his office!
I grew up on the Victory/Winget Mill Village until we moved to the Hillcrest area (1602 S. York Rd) in the 3rd or 4th grade. This was a major change in my life since not only did I make new friends, I actually had "in door plumbing" for the first time in my young life! Fortunately, I was able to maintain my old "Mill Hill" friendships as well as "the Hillcresters" through out the years.
The friends I made at Victory remain some of my best friends to this day! I look forward to seeing them and talking about "the good old days" when we meet at our 60th class reunion!

Special School Memories:

At Ashley High School I learned to love cars and girls and to detest math. I played JV football under Coach Mando (a great mentor) but then I allowed the love of cars & girls to take over my time, efforts and senses. In retrospect, I should have stayed with football!!
I had my own car in tenth grade, having bought my first one (a black '37 Chevrolet) by cutting Mrs. McArver's grass for years to pay her the awsome price of $40.00 for my first "ride". I actually got it when I was 14, but couldn't legally drive it until February of the tenth grade. Having a car made it easier to "get the girls". I worked at the Dixie Home store and at the Goodwill Esso to be able get the money ($500.00) to move up to my '50 Chevy slant-back. More car to impress the girls, but not much time to study. I really should have stayed with football!!
Oh well, I made it this far, was reasonably successful, have a great family, good health and a lot of great memories. I would like to thank all of my AHS friends for giving me good social, if not scholastic, memories of the three years at AHS!
